Palma Wrestlers at CIF

Palma senior, Hildelv Manzur, is unbeaten this year in the heavyweight class for Palma at 32-0 after he pinned his opponent at the Central Coast Section finals last Saturday. “I’m not here to just place,” Manzur said. “One of my goals is to be undefeated. I want to be the one on top of the podium.”

Manzur got off to a late start to the season after an extended football season. Yet a summer of training, in which he represented California at the Junior Nationals, came into play the moment he stepped back on the mats. “I put in a lot of time over the summer,” Manzur said. “I came within one match of being a junior All-American. Not lost on Manzur's mind is he came within one match of medaling last year at the state meet, going 3-2. One of his losses was to the top seed in this year's tournament. “What I learned from last year was to not get too nervous and take one match at a time,” Manzur said. “There are no easy matches at state.”

Despite being undefeated and a section champion, Manzur, who has had talks with Arizona State, did not receive a first-round bye. “It’s just the way the seeding comes out,” Manzur said. “Only the top two people get seeded. I haven't seen any of the guys in my bracket this year. Honestly, I haven’t thought about it. I don’t want to put myself under any more pressure.”

CCS runner-up Tyler Escoto of Palma (220) received a first round bye. Escoto will be joined by teammates Alex Garcia (138) and Christian Palacios (145).
