Chieftains on a Mission

Posted March 2, 2013

During the 2nd of 6 Lenten Series Masses being hosted by Palma School in its Blessed Edmund Rice Chapel, senior Henry Mirassou provided the following testimony about his experience in Palma’s international service program to Peru in 2012.

“Over the summer of [2012], I went to Peru on a mission trip with several Palma students and faculty. Amongst other things we built houses, visited orphanages, painted buildings, and hiked Macu Pichu. It was a trip of a lifetime, and I’m glad to say I walked away with new friends, life lessons, and a new outlook on life. Much of the time we spent together will stay with me forever. Hiking a man-made wonder of the world is nothing short of astonishing. Helping to house someone with so little is a priceless moment.

However, it was an activity that our group did with one another that I found utterly empowering. The Bible tells us about Jesus washing the feet of his disciples, and like Jesus we all washed each other’s feet. It was a greatly humbling moment. For in that second no one was above or below anyone. We were all equal, just like an American is to a Peruvian, or a white man is to a black man. It reminded me that all humans sometimes forget their place. It’s so easy to be caught up in a world where status automatically means more worth in a person’s life. This moment helped me to come out of the blinding mist and see the people around me for who they really were.

Several weeks ago I asked our entire student body to help donate what they could to the Brother Edmund Rice Society. Last year’s collections helped us build 2 homes in Peru. Each house costs roughly $750 to build, and in our next trip we hope to make three. So I ask you my brothers and sisters to donate whatever you can.

If you would like to make a donation to the efforts, please contact Co-Advisors George Garibay or Jim Micheletti.
