Worship and Prayer

Throughout the school year the Palma community gathers to worship and pray together.

BLESSED EDMUND RICE CHAPEL

Our on-campus Chapel offers Mass every morning before school for faculty, students, parents and the general public. Mass is celebrated school-wide on Holy days. Palma is rooted in the Catholic tradition and every student, regardless of their level or origin of faith, is welcomed and accepted. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered during Advent and Lent and a special series of Lenten Masses is offered on Wednesday evenings. Bishops and university presidents often come to celebrate these popular Masses.

The Chapel is a sanctuary for reflection and inspiration for all — a place of solemnity to contemplate life and one’s place in the world. Mass at Palma is a unifying experience promoting a brotherhood of respect, reverence and responsibility.

PRAYER

A useful definition of prayer is that it is “a good talk with an old friend.” All students are called to prayer, to meet their God in the silence of their hearts, and to grow strong in this relationship. Teachers make frequent use of the Chapel for group prayer, sacred silence, meditation, and at times, simply relaxation. The study of World Religions brings an understanding and appreciation of a wide range of practices from a variety of sacred traditions. Students are encouraged to broaden and deepen their sense of the sacred. Practice in prayer and meditation inspires peace, confidence, and spiritual connection.

THE BLESSED EDMUND RICE SOCIETY AND ACTION LEADERSHIP

Campus Ministry sponsors two special groups on campus. The Blessed Edmund Rice Society travels every year to Tijuana, Mexico to construct homes and build community with our brothers and sisters just over the border. Students earn their place in the society by dedicating themselves to service projects throughout the school year and various fundraising drives to make this trip successful. Palma has built close to 40 homes in Mexico. The Blessed Edmund Rice Society becomes a team that joins other athletic teams for Mass in the Blessed Edmund Rice Chapel one day a week.

Action Leadership is a smaller, very prestigious group nominated by the administrative Executive Committee and selected by Campus Ministry. Students attend a leadership conference in Florida with a number of other student leaders from Christian Brother schools as far away as Uruguay and Argentina. The purpose of this conference is to establish an Advocacy Plan for students to take back to their respective school. Action Leadership implements a plan building a more just, peaceful and environmentally sustainable world. Past Action Leadership plans have included a comprehensive recycling program at Palma as well as a shared publication on Father-Son relationships with inmates at the Soledad Prison.
