8th Grade Captures Title in Double Overtime Thriller!
In a game for the ages, the 8th grade basketball team won the MTJAL championship in double overtime vs. All Saints Day School (Carmel Valley). The final score was 69-65. The young Chieftains were at their best late in the season and defeated the #1 and #2 ranked teams in the league tournament to capture the title. Both teams played outstanding basketball and the game ended in regulation tied at 50. The season almost ended in a loss after the first overtime as the Chieftains trailed by two points with 5.8 seconds to play. After a well-designed inbound play, Aaron Garibay beat his defender and drove to the basket and scored in aerobatic fashion to tie the game as time expired. In the second overtime Palma took control by playing team defense, making great passes, and knocking down shots. Four of the five starters ended in double figures and were led by Garibay with 21 points, Jack Kaminskis and JT Amaral both with 15 points, and Owen Bengard with 10 points. Noah Paz finished with 8. Congratulations to coach Eagleson, coach Sterrett, and the entire 8thgrade basketball team on a fantastic season and memorable championship game.
