LETTER from the Principal
Dear People of Palma,
This is a good month to be American. Certainly November is commonly noted for our national holiday of gratitude near the end of the month that we celebrate as Thanksgiving. We welcome the opportunity to break from work to visit with families and indulge in a delicious feast of family recipes and traditional turkey and fixings, as we thank God for our many blessings. Prior to this, however, we will experience Election Day, when we exercise our privileged right to vote, and Veterans’ Day, when we honor our military — active duty and not — who have sacrificed to preserve many privileges we have come to appreciate as rights. This is also Native American Heritage Month, when we honor the heritage of our indigenous peoples — an American tradition celebrated since 1990 when President H.W. Bush dedicated this month to provide “enhanced self-esteem, pride, and self-awareness to young Native Americans.”
American Catholic schools have an impressive record of civil servitude that extends far beyond leadership in the Church. Research has proven that when compared to public school graduates, Catholic school graduates are three times more likely to give of their time and money, and twice more likely to give of their talent through volunteer efforts for the common good. Other studies have demonstrated that an overwhelming majority of American leaders in public health, the corporate world, politics and more have had extensive formation and education in Catholic schools.
There are many correlative and causal explanations for Catholic school graduates’ propensity for leadership in the Church and society. Perhaps we need to validate the more pertinent factor here, however; that the young men and women of Palma are challenged, motivated, and intellectually prepared to be gifts of love and selves to a world that needs their leadership more than ever. We praise and challenge them for their service because it is the right thing to do — not because they have done it for an extrinsic reward, for prizes, or even because they are required to do so at a minimum of 60 hours before they graduate.
Educating our students is a collective responsibility here at Palma, and civil servitude is in demand everywhere. The holidays will present a myriad of opportunities for us to give to others in need. In the footsteps of our saintly founder, Blessed Edmund Rice, let us commit ourselves to service simply because it is the right thing to do. Go Chieftains!
Yours in Blessed Edmund Rice,
Mr. David Sullivan
Principal
Dear Palma Family,
Thanks to a generous grant, we’ve installed eight brand-new vape sensors throughout our campus! These state-of-the-art sensors will help us ensure that our school remains a safe, healthy environment for all our students.
Why vape sensors? These little devices are game-changers. Not only do they detect vapor from e-cigarettes in real time, but they can also alert us immediately when and where an incident occurs. This helps us stop vaping before it becomes a bigger issue and reinforces the message that Palma is a place where health and well-being come first.
With vaping becoming a growing concern among young people, we are incredibly fortunate to have access to these tools. They allow us to stay ahead of the curve and create teachable moments that encourage better choices, all while keeping our campus smoke-free. It’s just another step we’re taking to make sure Palma stays a place our students can thrive—mind, body, and soul.
Thanks, as always, for your support and partnership in making our school the best it can be! If you have any questions or want to learn more about these new sensors, feel free to reach out. Together, we’ve got this!
Go Palma!

As we head into the Holiday season, our Chieftains have been busy! During the month of October, our students celebrated Homecoming with an array of activities like Mario Kart races, a Lego challenge and gym decorating. Our varsity volleyball team defeated our varsity football team in a highly anticipated lunchtime volleyball match. Our annual Homecoming Dodgeball Tournament was well attended by students and parents as we watched everyone battle it out to take home our dodgeball trophy. Lastly, we crowned our 2024 Homecoming King and Queen during halftime of our varsity football game. Congratulations to James Hinkle ’25 and Maya Giannini ’25. Our Chieftains just finished an incredible week of fundraising for our Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign where they raised over $4,000 towards Breast Cancer Awareness.
November is shaping up to be an amazing month of gratefulness and giving for our Chieftains. On November 1st, we kicked off our “No Shave November” in which our male students and faculty have a chance to donate $20
to not shave their face during the month of November. Everyone will have a chance to participate in this Palma tradition by voting on a few different categories of winners plus participating in a “homemade mustache” contest on Friday, November 22nd. Money raised during our No Shave November will be donated to the American Cancer Society in support of prostate cancer awareness. Our Cans for Credit campaign will make a comeback as well with the students earning class credits for their canned food donation during the week of November 18-22. Our Interact Club will be hosting this event and are looking forward to giving back to our community through our canned food drive.
Dark Ash House is still in the lead for the Chieftain Cup with Palm Branch catching up quickly. Everyday there is a chance to win House points on campus and our Chieftains come to school ready to compete. November will be filled with House point opportunities for our students. Will there be a leaderboard change this month?
HONOR ROLL: FIRST QUARTER 2024-2025

A Giant THANK YOU to Our Volunteers
Thank you to all of the parents who have volunteered at our athletic contests so far this year. You are making a huge difference and we cannot do it without you.
Chieftain Athletics in November
Our high school winter sports seasons begin on November 4th, which include basketball, wrestling and soccer for all young men and women. I encourage you to attend as many games as you can. Student-athletes are aware of your presence and it makes a difference to know they have your support.
palmaathletics.org
Have you visited palmaathletics.org yet? Our new website contains schedules, rosters, scores, photos and more. It’s your go-to web address for all things Palma athletics.
Get the app
Palma Athletic's new app is available at both Apple and Android app stores. Download yours today.
This is a well-attended tournament. If you are interested in advertising during the event, please contact Mr. Bishop at 422-8510 or bishop@palmaschool.org.
Home Campus
If you plan on participating on a High School winter sports team, (both girls’ and boys’ basketball, soccer, wrestling) or Junior High basketball, and haven’t already done so, you need to get your athletic clearance before the season begins. Visit www.homecampus.com. Click “For Students & Parents” and select “California.” Returning users log into the existing account used the previous school year. New users need to create an account. Please register with a valid Parent/Guardian email address as the username and generate a password. Select “Start Clearance Here” and complete all of the required fields. Sign the documents by typing in an EXACT match of what is on the Student & Parent/Guardian page. Make sure to click “Save & Continue” after completing the files page to submit the clearance. Your clearance is ready for review by Palma School once you have reached the “Confirmation Message” page. YOU ARE NOT CLEARED YET. Palma must review and clear you. An email will be sent once you have been cleared for participation.
Let Everyone Know Who You Are
Put your company name or family message on all three scoreboards and on the Palma athletics website. Your message could appear on the Jumbotron at Rabobank Stadium, on the Holaday Seed Scoreboard in the gym and on the 17-foot outdoor scoreboard during contests on our track, field and baseball stadium. Plus, it will be displayed on the new website. Contact Mr. Bishop at bishop@palmaschool.org for more details.
Get Involved
There are a variety of ways the Palma community can participate at athletic events and we can never have too many volunteers. From helping out at games to providing the many hands needed at fund raising events, Palma parents are the ones who make athletics happen for our students. Be reminded that all parents are encouraged to attend our monthly Athletic Council meetings held in the Cislini Study Center. To volunteer CLICK HERE

Important Information Regarding the Launch of the 2025-26 FAFSA Form
There are major changes and improvements coming to the 2025-26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form. As a result, the new form will be available December 1, 2024.
The launch date will apply only for the 2025-26 FAFSA form.
The changes to the FAFSA form for the 2025-26 aid year include
• expanded eligibility for federal student aid and
• a more streamlined application process.
All seniors were walked through the steps of creating their FSA ID in class last week. Parents make sure to create your StudentAid.gov account — and remember your username and password so you can access and submit the 2025-26 FAFSA form when it becomes available in December. You will use this username and password the entire time your child is in college.
Here is the link to create your Parents ID: create a FSA ID. Both the student and the parent must create an FSA ID in order to sign the FAFSA for submission.
Please create your Parent FSA ID before the Financial Aid Presentation on December 10th at 5:00pm in Brother Dunne Hall.
The College Essay
This is your opportunity to tell the college about yourself — your hopes, ambitions, life experiences, inspirations. Take your time on this assignment. Be open. Be reflective. Find your individual voice and express it honestly.
Do’s and Don’ts for your application
- Do use unique personal anecdotes. You want your application to stand out!
- Do get to know your universities and what they stand for before filling out your applications.
- Do follow any directions given in your application, such as adhering to word or page limits. Read the question thoroughly and don’t elicit information that was not requested.
- Don’t procrastinate. Last minute, rushed applications will not reflect your best work.
- Don’t lie. Period. Any fabricated grades or omitted grades, test scores, leadership positions – admission counselors will find out and it will certainly jeopardize your acceptance and scholarships.
Other Aid Forms Required By Private Colleges
Seniors applying to private colleges and universities should ensure that they complete all financial aid applications required by the school. Some private colleges require applicants to complete and submit the CSS Profile. For many colleges this form is due in early November. This form can be completed online at https://cssprofile.collegeboard.org. Colleges that do not require the CSS Profile often require applicants to complete other university-specific financial aid forms. Check with the Admissions and Financial Aid offices at the private colleges to which you are applying. Failure to do so could reduce the amount of financial aid you might receive.
Virtual and In-Person College Visits
All high school students can attend this presentation in the Cislini Study Center. They must register for the presentation in their SCOIR account at least two days before the event.
Nov 5 8:30am University of the Pacific
Senior Monthly Reminder

• Prepare early decision, early action, or rolling admission applications.
