LETTER from the Principal
Dear People of Palma,
Thank you for reading this monthly newsletter. Try as I might to keep my communication with you brief, I could not limit myself this month. This is a beautiful time of year, and I beam with pride at our Chieftain students, our highly committed teachers, staff and coaches, and so many supportive parents, volunteers, benefactors and proud alumni. Palma School is a place where The Essential Elements of an Edmund Rice Education thrive, where we “celebrate the value and dignity of each person and nurture the development of the whole person,” where we “collaborate and share responsibility for the mission,” and where we “pursue excellence in all endeavors” (Essential Elements V, VI, and VII). Thank you for your sacrifices and investments of your time, your talent, and your treasure in making Palma School a great success.
October Month of the Rosary. Catholics have a strong devotion to Mary, the Blessed Mother of God, and especially through the holy rosary. Some have described praying the rosary as a spiritual weapon to counter the powers of darkness. The rosary is not a form of idolatry; people don’t use the rosary to pray to Mary. Rather, it is preferred to think of the rosary as an instrument for meditation that empowers us to pray with and through Mary. We invoke the Mother of God to intercede for us as we meditate on the sacred mysteries of the Gospel that surround the infancy and early life of Jesus (the Joyful Mysteries), Jesus’ Passion and death (the Sorrowful Mysteries), the Resurrection of Jesus (the Glorious Mysteries), and the ministry of Jesus (the most recent Luminous Mysteries). As a mantra of repetitive prayers are recited (the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory Be), believers meditate on these mysteries of the Gospel in order to engage the mind and soul for communion with God.
The Palma Family is beyond blessed, and yet we are burdened with many needs as well. I ask that you keep me and all whom I serve here at Palma in your prayer. I invite anyone willing and able to join me in prayer on the 2nd day of each week of classes in October, beginning next week, in our Bl. Edmund Rice Chapel for 20-25 minutes after class dismissal, and before most practices begin. Even parents who pick up their kids can join us if they so choose. All are welcome to join me in the chapel on Tuesdays at 2:45pm on October 8, 15, 22, and 29. If you cannot be with us in person perhaps you might pray from wherever you are in spiritual union with us — even at the above times? Please join me in commitment to prayer in a special way this month in solidarity with Christ, his mother Mary, and the strong legacy of rosary prayer among Catholic schools.
Palma Parking Lot Pick-up/Drop-off. As nice as it is seeing parents at drop-off times in the morning and at pick-up times in the afternoon, it would not hurt our students to exercise some pedestrian safety and walk to another prearranged space along any one of our neighboring streets for their parents to pick them up. This would relieve the 10-15 minute congestion in our parking lot and along the streets at the end of each school day. And, after picking up their favorite Palma student on campus, if parents would simply turn right instead of left at the corner of Iverson and Acacia Streets, drivers could further alleviate congestion at drop-off and pick-up times.
To exercise some common-sense courtesy in keeping our students safe, please do not stop in the middle of the driveway upon entering our lot; it often creates a log jam behind you on a two-way street. If you see space keep the pace. Narrow the gap between cars by driving all the way into the lot, beyond the first turn, even beyond the main gate in front of the gym (red curb), if possible. If you must stop, please pull over along the drop-off lane and allow others to pass you on the left instead of parking and/or stopping right in the middle of the lane. Let’s be cautious and prudent and kind to all.
Dress Code. Perhaps one of the most defining characteristics of a private, especially a Catholic school is the reality of an enforced dress code, if not a uniform. For many years, Palma has adhered to a dress code, which is clearly stated in the Student and Parent Handbook and on our website (Dress Code), and to which families consent when students are enrolled. I hope I never tire of the need to deal with issues regarding dress code. Yes, there are days when administrators and teachers “pick and choose their battles” regarding dress code enforcement, but there is something so healthy about the struggle between an adolescent who craves her/his independence and the adult who must provide the parameters and subsequent consequences for those who go too far. It is a very human desire to rebel, and even more so a teen’s desire, to do what he/she wants. But perhaps it is equally important that the threshold for that rebellion be a safe one. And if that threshold is merely a student’s attempt to evade the dress code, then I am happy to enter that struggle anytime and anywhere. I find it far better to work at keeping students in compliance with dress code, than to confront the tragic realities of illegal and illicit rebellion that so often plague many others beyond our campus.
Thank you for reading. Thank you more for your support. Remind your progeny: Be a leader. Be a Chieftain! And let’s mentor that.
Yours in Blessed Edmund Rice,
David J. Sullivan

Happy Fall, Chieftains!
Things are busy here on campus with lots of House Happenings. The students kicked off September with a Club Rush event where over 30 different clubs were advertised for our students to sign up and join. Since then our lunch periods have been filled with club meetings and activities. We just finished up our Palma Pride Week with daily Spirit Days, poster making for the football game against our neighborhood rival and a House Social dedicated to all things Homecoming. The most popular Palma Pride Spirit Day was “Anything but a Backpack” day which highlighted our students’ creativity. We saw a baby stroller, a BBQ pit, a few fishing nets, a grain sack and more. Our House and Huddle leaders have begun planning our “Party in the USA” Homecoming Week to be held October 7-12, 2024. They are excited to host lunchtime and evening activities that week like a Lego Challenge, Mario Kart Races, a Snowball Fight, our famous Dodgeball Tournament and our Homecoming Dance in the Palma Gym. We will close out October with a week dedicated to the fight against breast cancer during our “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” week. All students can wear free dress for $5 per day. The House who raises the most money that week will be awarded house points unless the junior high students raise more money than them…a fun twist to motivate our students even more to raise money for such an important cause.
Junior High
Our junior high students have elected their class officers and we kicked off their first event with a dance in the gym with the chosen theme “Glow in the Dark.” Palma hosted just over 300 very excited middle school students from schools across the central coast. Mr. Silva is hosting a Lunchtime League where the boys have competed in Brawl Stars, a free throw shooting contest and 3 on 3 tug o’ war. They will compete all year to eventually crown a Lunchtime League Champion at the end of the school year.
CSF stands for the California Scholarship Federation, whose mission is to recognize and encourage academic achievement among students in California. There are approximately 1500 chapters in schools throughout the state, and each chapter is composed of students who meet CSF eligibility requirements. Eligible students become members by submitting applications based on their semester grades, with good behavior another factor for qualification. Membership is for one semester, and membership drives are held each semester within established periods dictated by CSF bylaws.
Congratulations to the students below who had spring 2024 semester grades and behavior that qualified them to apply for membership and who also met the deadline for submitting an application. Students must reapply each semester they are eligible; the next application period will be in February based on the current semester’s grades. Students can earn Life Membership by earning membership during four semesters in grades 10 through 12, one of which must be based on grades earned during senior year. If you have any questions regarding CSF, please contact Mr. Viarengo (viarengo@palmaschool.org).

A Giant THANK YOU to Our Volunteers
Thank you to all of the parents who have volunteered at our athletic contests so far this year. You are making a huge difference and we cannot do it without you.
Chieftain Athletics in October
October is a big month for Chieftain athletics — especially now that regular league seasons are under way. Our squads are heading into their most impactful contests in league play. I encourage everyone to attend as many games as you can. Our student athletes are aware of your presence and it makes a huge difference to know they have your support.
Winter Sports Reminder
There is a MANDATORY Player/Parent/Coach meeting on Wednesday, October 30th at 6:00pm in Br. Dunne Hall. This meeting is for High School student-athletes who are planning to play on a winter and/or spring sports team.

Have you visited palmaathletics.org yet? Our new website contains schedules, rosters, scores, photos and more. It’s your go-to web address for all things Palma athletics.
Home Campus
If you plan on participating on a High School winter sports team, (both girls’ and boys’ basketball, soccer, wrestling) or Junior High basketball, and haven’t already done so, you need to get your athletic clearance before the season begins. Visit www.homecampus.com. Click “For Students & Parents” and select “California.” Returning users log into the existing account used the previous school year. New users need to create an account. Please register with a valid Parent/Guardian email address as the username and generate a password. Select “Start Clearance Here” and complete all of the required fields. Sign the documents by typing in an EXACT match of what is on the Student & Parent/Guardian page. Make sure to click “Save & Continue” after completing the files page to submit the clearance. Your clearance is ready for review by Palma School once you have reached the “Confirmation Message” page. YOU ARE NOT CLEARED YET. Palma must review and clear you. An email will be sent once you have been cleared for participation.
Let Everyone Know Who You Are
Put your company name or family message on all three scoreboards and on the Palma athletics website. Your message could appear on the Jumbotron at Rabobank Stadium, on the Holaday Seed Scoreboard in the gym and on the 17-foot outdoor scoreboard during contests on our track, field and baseball stadium. Plus, it will be displayed on the new website. Contact Mr. Bishop at bishop@palmaschool.org for more details.
Get Involved
There are a variety of ways the Palma community can participate at athletic events and we can never have too many volunteers. From helping out at games to providing the many hands needed at fund raising events, Palma parents are the ones who make athletics happen for our students. Be reminded that all parents are encouraged to attend our monthly Athletic Council meetings held in the Cislini Study Center. To volunteer CLICK HERE

College Financial Aid Presentation for Seniors and Their Families
Palma will be hosting a College Financial Aid Presentation on December 10th at 5:00pm in Brother Dunne Hall for all senior families. We have also invited senior parents from Notre Dame High School to attend. The FAFSA will be making its new debut in December this year instead of October. The FAFSA is undergoing many changes and will be released in early December.
Other Aid Forms Required by Private Colleges
Seniors applying to private colleges and universities should ensure that they complete all financial aid applications required by the school. Some private colleges require applicants to complete and submit the CSS Profile. For many colleges this form is due in early November. This form can be completed online at https://cssprofile.collegeboard.org/. Colleges that do not require the CSS Profile often require applicants to complete other university-specific financial aid forms. Check with the Admissions and Financial Aid offices at the private colleges to which you are applying. Failure to do so could reduce the amount of financial aid you might receive.
Optional Digital PSAT/NMSQT Testing for Grades 10-11
Sophomores and juniors who opted to sign up to take the digital PSAT/NMSQT this month will be testing on Friday, Oct 18th. They will begin the test at 8:45am. Students who are late will not be allowed to test. Students can prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT by using the free resources that can be found on the student section of the College Board site: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/prep.html
Virtual and In-Person College Visits
All high school students can attend these presentations in the Cislini Study Center. They must register for the presentation in their SCOIR account at least two days before the event.
